I suck at keeping this thing updated, just so people can know what's going on, I'm going to do the City & Guilds photography, registration next week, my car's away at the minute after the fun of engine overheats and appearantly a cracked cylinder head, so I've got an Audi 80 as a courtesy car, which I initially though was bit nippy then looked up on carfolio and discovered that early '90s Audi 80s all have at least a 2 litre engine! Monday I went to dublin to see Beck, which was very entertaining, he puts on a great show and played a load of old stuff as well as newer (which is good, cos I don't know much of his new stuff), and did a great megamix of justin timberlake/tatu/beyonce knowles/vanilla ice and a bunch of other stuff ... that's about it for life of me right now

so ... with my xmltv playing, I was having odd issues about not being able to reach ananova from pisces, yet I could from lots of other places, which made getting listings rather hard. Yesterday I emailed BIFHE about city and guilds photography, to find today that the message was delayed cos it couldn't get there, lo and behold, I could telnet to port 25 of their server from elsewhere, hmmm thought I. So, to try and figure this out, I logged into two machines and started catting files in /proc/sys/net/ipv4 to try and work out why this was happening, then I stumbled on tcp_ecn, the tcp explicit congestion notification stuff, it was turned on on pisces, but not in other places, turning it of, it works! yay! and so does ananova! double yay! so, the lesson to be learnt is, be careful of this kernel configuration option kiddies, it'll make you start pulling out hair and that sorta stuff ... even though in the help it says that you're probably best saying "no" to it ... oops :)
on another note, it's my birthday on friday, to paraphrase from russell, it'll be 5 years from when I turned 21 ... ouch, that's scary. And just to bring up some tech stuff, I'll go over the recent things
work: failover for when a server fails, have another take over, content management systems do my head in, iptables rules to log the latest lovely MS virus.
home: working on getting some new scsi drives for pisces, some space increase and should help reliability by a good bit, as the errors around are dma related at the minute ... not fun, xmltv, did something to print out the next 2 hours of what's on telly, given a channel name, to irc, example

and last, not really techy, but at least putting it up here will tell other people about it, who can bug me to make me do it, I'm thinking about taking a photography course at BIFHE, trying to work out if I should do the GCSE (no requirements) AS Level (says you "should" have GCSE in whatever subject you do, not photography specific) or a city & guilds, which is another option, but I dunno what the qualifications like, or what all you do in it
something that's not really happening at night at the minute (hence the time of this entry) am pondering going to chemist's (or even doc's) to see if I can get something for it, my inability to take pills may cause trouble with this somewhat though. bleah
Not that I've much to see, my stomach's been crap all week, which has been unhelpful, the weather has been great, but unable to make use of it, my car is overheating, so is headed to the garage next week to get sorted out, seeing as I can't get more than a few miles without the red light coming on and steam coming out of the water bottle thingie beside the radiator, which is rather unuseful. In other news, it's my birthday during next week ... to quote russell (though he's younger) it'll have been 5 years since I turned 21 (eek!) Other than all that, I'm just feeling bleah, and shit and depressed and stuff ... as per usual really
